This afternoon Borough Mayor Dial, City of Ketchikan Mayor Kiffer, and City of Saxman Mayor Seludo issued a Joint Declaration of Local Disaster Emergency Due to the South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department Building Fire.
In accordance with AS 26.23.140 the issuance of the local disaster declaration formally activates the Greater Ketchikan Area Multi-Jurisdictional Emergency Operations Plan (GKA MJ EOP), and allows for assistance and funding from the State of Alaska and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).
The Borough Assembly, Saxman City Council, and Ketchikan City Council are scheduled to confirm the disaster declaration at their meetings of April 15, April 17, and April 18 respectively.

On Monday, April 15, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. South Tongass Fire Chief Rydeen and Captain Rhein will provide an update to the Borough Assembly on the details of the April 9th fire and recovery efforts.
