Planning Commission

The Planning Commission reviews land use and subdivision matters and makes recommendations on zoning and development within the Borough. 

What the Commission Does:

• Prepares and updates the Comprehensive Plan
• Serves as the Platting Authority for subdivisions
• Reviews rezones and land use regulation updates
• Decides on Conditional Use Permits (CUPs) and Variances
• Hears appeals of certain administrative decisions

Meetings

• Second Tuesday of each month
• May also meet on the fourth Tuesday, as needed

Application deadlines are typically the Friday following the previous month’s meeting.

Appeals

Planning Commission decisions may be appealed within 15 days of the decision date.

• Conditional Use Permits and Variances are appealed to the Borough Assembly (Board of Adjustment).
• Subdivision decisions are appealed to Superior Court.

Membership & Appointments

The Planning Commission consists of seven members:

• Four members who reside within Ketchikan city limits
• Three members who reside in the Borough outside city limits

Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Assembly. Appointments are made annually at the first Assembly meeting in March.

State law requires Planning Commissioners to file a Public Official Financial Disclosure Statement within 30 days of taking office.
